Water Treatment and Distribution System
Study and Design
Delmar, Delaware

As a result of the Town of Delmar's difficulty in complying with EPA's requirements for lead and copper content in its drinking water, Davis, Bowen & Friedel, Inc. was asked to assist the Town with improvements to its water system. Secondary iron concentration was also a problem in the community. Improvements included upgrading of 4- and 6-inch water mains throughout the Town, replacement of all service piping from the main to user’s property line, installation of 8- and 10-inch water mains east of the Town, and upgrade of the water storage and a new treatment facility. The project also involved extension of water service to annexation areas.

Located across the street from the original water treatment plant, the new water treatment facility replicates the Federal period architectural design of existing nearby buildings. Water treatment includes pumping well water into a packed tower aerator to remove carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide. Although no hydrocarbons have been detected in the Town's drinking water, the packed tower aerator also will remove any traces of volatile organic compounds. The treatment method for iron removal includes oxidation and filtration. Lead and copper control is accomplished through pH adjustment, by removing carbon dioxide and adding small amounts of lime.
