Worcester County Library
Ocean City, Maryland
The design of the new branch library in Ocean City draws from the venacular architecture of its seaside community. It incorporates the aesthetic qualities of the "Stick Style" architecture with a modern interpretation. It is comprised of three distinct masses. The main level includes the circulation desk, the computer center, children's stacks & program room, periodicals, two collections, and a staff work area. An intermediate level contains a meeting room and public restrooms, and is configured for after-hours access. The 2nd floor is comprised of a mezzanine that over looks the first floor, and includes the non-fiction collections, and the Ocean City history collection.
The building is clad in a combination of metal panels, and cementitious siding/trim. The attached porch provides outdoor reading and lounge area. The tower marks the main entry, and serves as a beacon, announcing the library's new location in town.
The interior space of the building is predominately open. This allows for the exposed structural framing and an interior atrium space. Included in the finishes are recycled and recyclable carpets with low v.o.c. adhesives, bamboo floors to define circulation, and painted gypsum wallboard over metal stud framing.
The Library exhibits several "green" features including parking under the building, thereby reducing the heat-island and conserving the site area. The use of natural light and the use of a geothermal heat pump system further supports sustainable design. The use of native vegitation requiring minimal watering and pervious paving further supports the "green" design.
