Friedel Residence
Trappe, Maryland
Located on a six-acre rural site on Island Creek in Talbot County, this house was designed for a couple with a love for the water. While the theme for the home was grounded upon traditional forms and scale, the layout was generated to accommodate contemporary living. Outdoor spaces, including porches, patio, gardens, walks and drives, were considered equally important as those within; the result being a home that connects gracefully with its natural setting. Virtually every room has a view and easy access to the outdoors. Exterior materials were selected consistent with the area's waterfront vernacular; interior detailing followed the owners' desire toward "warmth" and "welcoming".
The home itself is essentially two stories and comprises nearly 5,000 SF of conditioned space. Unique to the layout is the circular sun room on the first floor and the corresponding guest room above. The form serves as a type of "hinge" allowing the home to bend as it presents itself to the river; it also serves on the first floor, as a divider of sorts separating living/entertainment from the bedroom wing. Complete services were provided, including architecture, surveying, civil and structural engineering |

Swanson Residence
Milford, Delaware
Located on a wooded bluff overlooking a scenic pond outside Milford, Delaware, this 3,200 SF custom home was designed as a place for a newly retired couple as a place to enjoy the serenity of nature. This siting of the home recognizes both its relationship to the road and to that of the pond. The home is comprised of two distinct architectural forms, somewhat askew from the other, one relating directly to the roadway from which it is accessed, the other the pond. The primary forms are reminiscent of traditional residential vernacular and are united by a circumferential form expressed by a pathway of slate and a colonnade of cedar posts, which navigates one from the home's entry, through the house, and onward to a path leading to the pond. Maximum views of the pond were maintained throughout the home. Natural materials were used, including species of cedar, oak and cherry, both interior and exterior- to give the home warmth and to reinforce its presence among the trees. Services provided include architecture, civil and structural engineering. |
